The oil companies are not only raping the lands belonging to the Native American but also raping their women.

There has been a dramatic increase in crime, sexual assaults and human trafficking within the Native American communities that border pipeline construction in North Dakota. Much of it is fueled by “man camps” or temporary trailer parks that house hundreds of out-of-state workers many of whom are not properly screened or vetted by the oil companies and their subcontractors.

What brings this problem into focus is the recent disappearance of a 32-year-old mother, Olivia Lone Bear who went missing from Fort Berthold Reservation and has not been heard from since.

To add insult to injury is the argument by the pipeline construction firms that the pipelines that go through their tribal lands will mean local jobs for the Native American community. Nothing could be farther from the truth. As always, the importation of oil rig personnel is always based on previous experience, experience that many young local Native Americans do not have.

In summary, the XL pipelines that crisscross North and South Dakota violate sovereign Indian reservation rights, contaminate the ground water with every leak, which are often, and now are the cause of crime against men, women and children who are unwitting victims in this latest corporate takeover of lands for profit.
